… new printer and gave up multiple times due to bad reviews for ALL printers
on February 2, 2018
I spent a ton of time looking for a new printer and gave up multiple times due to bad reviews for ALL printers. I have had good luck with HP in the past. Finally bought the 8710 with hesitation. I couldn’t be happier with it. It came with standard cartridges that were actually full and lasted a long time. I also bought XL replacement cartridges. I weighed the color cartridges before and after (haven’t run out the larger black yet). The standard color cartridges had about 10.5 grams of ink, the XL had about 28 grams. That is ink weight, not cartridge weight. The empty color cartridges were about 25.5 grams. So far after 9 months all is good.
UPDATE- The Love/Hate Soap Opera Continues -Unusual Use For This Printer Unlike Any Others I Have Had (AUTO-INK INCLUDED)
on May 24, 2016
(I promised I would update as I find more to report on this printer and I am back again at the end of August 2016 to let you know I found another reason to up my original low rating another star. This one is important. SEE UPDATE AT THE END)
Good machine, would buy again

Printer works great, but is a little noisy, though not too bad. Black print is clean, collor prints look good, though not what I would consider professional photo quality. I love the automatic 2 sided printing, and the 2 sided scanning and faxing if using the document feeder. From past experience with this type print head I strongly recommenced sticking with the HP ink, especially if it sets 2 or 3 days without being used. Not as fast as a laser, but faster than most inkjets and good print. Ink use seems pretty economical in normal mode. Only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the noise, though it is not excessive, just more than I like.

Would not work right out of the box. Would not recognize the printer ink that was packed with it. I had purchased an extra set of ink, but it would not recognize that either. Clearly a defective unit. I found it flimsy overall and cheaply made. I returned this one and ordered the HP 8720 for a little higher cost, and the 8720 seems far superior, both in construction and in features.

This printer purchase has been a total nightmare. The product I ordered from Amazon and whomever fulfilled it has caused a massive headache that no one seems to want to take ownership of. So the OfficeJet Pro 8710 I ordered requires HP954 only ink refills. They do not sell HP954 in the USA, it is only for Latin American countries. So, they US equivalent, HP952 gets an incompatible cartridge error on my device. I try calling HP Support and I always get a message to hang up and go online for answer. They solution is to check for correct ink cartridges. Why do they sell these units in the US if you cannot get correct cartridges. I am now out of time with Amazon to apparently help. So I have no way of getting the correct ink cartridges to work and no support. I am now going to be wary of any printer that uses proprietary ink and sells units with different ink model numbers all over the world. Shame on Amazon for letting this happen on thier watch.
Great Printer! Don’t tink you can go wrong.

Awesome Printer! As an IT guy for the last 25+ years I have configured and repaired printers of all makes. I have always been a fan of HP due to their reputation and the vast amount of company support. With a wife in college and a daughter in high school we killed our last All-In-One printer that we have had for the last 5 years. What I was looking for was a printer that would print on both sides of the paper, wireless and network wired connection, one that could take the punishment of a lot of printing, and a some what manageable ink replacement price. Color printing was not a real must have nor was printing speed but that doesn’t mean this printer lacks that. Set up was a snap for those that hate all the technical stuff but the printer is very configurable for those of us that like gadgets. What I really like is the ability to print from my smart-phone or tablet from any where in the world directly to the printer using an HP email account. All I need is network connection. I also like the service HP has that can monitor the ink usage and send you more ink when it is getting low. I can’t count the number of late nights I had to run all over looking for a 24 hour grocery store because daughter waited until the last minute to do a report and needed color and the old printer ink was out.
Great Printer But Expensive Ink

This printer works beautifully and the scanner is outstanding. However, the ink is a killer. The subscription for the so-called “instant ink” costs 3.3 cents, 4 cents or 6 cents a page depending on whether you sign up for a charge of $9.99, $3.99 or $2.99 per month, respectively. Moreover, the instant ink subscription counts the merest number of characters as a full page of printing. For example, printing just the words “Instant Ink” in black ink counts as a full page of printing and would cost a minimum of 3.3 cents and could cost about a nickel depending on your plan. My solution was to buy (from Amazon) a refurbished Brother Compact Laser Printer for $69.50 and a set of INK4WORK® 2 Pack toner cartridges (from Amazon) costing $14.95 and yielding an estimated printed 5,200 pages. I am printing like crazy all black and white documents on the Brother printer which is a limited purpose machine but which has worked flawlessly. The ink cost for these black and white pages on the Brother is roughly .003 cents per page (that’s 3 one thousandths of one cent or a thousand pages for $2.88). I have quit the instant ink program and purchased (from Amazon) a set of “high yield” cartridges for the HP Printer at a cost of $103.95. I will use these sparingly and only for documents which need color. By the way these HP “high yield” cartridges hold less ink than those supplied with the instant ink program. I will report on how many printed pages these “high yield” cartridges yield. In any case it seems to me that HP is charging a high price for ink — too high for me.
Worst printer I have ever owned.
on July 11, 2017
I don’t write reviews often, but this printer is so bad I feel I must warn others. It is the WORST printer I have ever used. It literally makes me want to scream every time I attempt to use it. While the print quality may be okay – the stupid printer goes “off line” and despite running the diagnostics and firmware updates it will not stay on line. I often have to power it off and unplug several times it to bring it back on line. TOTAL PAIN. I had the 8600 version of this printer and it worked flawlessly until we lost it due to a power surge during the storm.
Wireless software – connectivity awful – not a network problem – a printer problem

I am very disappointed in this product. We have had it since August an it continues to lose the ability to connect wirelessly – even though it shows a strong wireless signal. I contacted HP for support – after 3 hours – they wanted $99.99 to fix the problem. HP just lost a loyal customer on this one. In addition, I have had the same thing happen with 3 of them at work. Our IT Dept. Says that they are defective. Now trying to find out how to get this one back for replacement – I ordered it from Amazon – obviously – Anybody have words of wisdom on this?
BUYER BEWARE! DO NOT SIGN UP FOR INSTANT INK.
on December 9, 2016
By Amazon Customer
The cartridges that come with the printer belong to HP and if you install them, you will be signing up for their Instant Ink whether you intend to or not. The cancel at any time claim is also false, as the cancellation isn’t valid until the next billing cycle. In the meantime, they can charge you whatever they want to. After an hour on the phone with an HP supervisor, HP agreed to send me regular ink cartridges and refund my charges. However, if I had it to do over, I would buy a printer without the Instant Ink scenario. As it is, they made it right with me and the printer works just fine. Too much trouble to return at this point.
