SCANNING:
Using the drivers and software from the enclosed CD, the PC menu did not show scan sizes larger than A4. Called help-line, and could not figure out why. Escalated to higher level help for subsequent call-back (pending).
Subsequent download and re-install of the full software/driver package from the Brother web-site did not change the menu sections for paper dimensions. A3 / 11×17 sizes did not show. Via the Brother software already installed downloaded latest software/driver again (and now allowed the installation of fax drivers that I do not need and had not installed initially). Now the menu shows the larger paper sizes under the size selection.

Having scanned documents for several hours over two days the unit started to develop a sharp, but not loud, “purr”, which sounded like it was coming from plastic gears. Now, starting scanning on third day, the unit is very loud, a disconcerting noise that sounds like an impending failure. Having scanned thousands of documents with a previous MFC-6430 without fault, this is disappointing. The MFC-6430 was discarded due to plugged printer head (as was the subsequent Epson WF-7620), not because of failing drives/ gears (which I suspect is already happening after some hours of scan operation).
With dual scanner heads, two-sided scanning is a breeze! Big plus, and eliminates the potential for feed error that could be a problem with the above mentioned two units when the condition of the paper was less than perfect.
Scan quality is very good.
No mis-feeds of normal paper (unless thin, glossy paper, out of magazines, but even then it is impressive and forgiven for a few mis-feeds of paper which likely is not part of the unit’s design criteria).

And the ADF scanning operation was so quiet!, … with the unit fresh out of the box.

PRINTING:
So, far, just test prints, but prints fast, and nice output. Louder than Epson.

COST:
The price is really amazing (low) for these units (including previously mentioned ones), but as usual, will be paying for it via ink purchases.

If I decide that the new noise and noise level is a “personality trait” rather than impending ADF feed/ gear failure I will keep the printer.

Great color printer for small business / home business type use

 on April 11, 2017
By JC
I spent years avoiding inkjet printers because I don’t like to buy ink. However, I was going to Staples more often than previous years for color prints and it was time to change.

Loud grinding (plastic gear?) noise after two days of scanning.

Very capable MFC, But inks aren’t water resistant

This MFC is very competent, excellent cloud integration, and I can fax from my mobile device. But as a business class printer, the inks really should be water resistant, so I deducted a star.

Defective Machines

This is the second purchase of this printer. The first one had a defective NIC card. This second one had defective print heads. It smeared and skipped lines all over the pages immediately upon use. We did extensive trouble shooting, cleaned, aligned print heads and paper, new ink, etc. without success. We have Brother printers that have been power houses in our small business with life spans over 8 years. We were purchasing this for a replacement but had to return. These Brother printers were not the same quality that we have experienced in the past. Since we print and scan ledger size documents, we were hoping this was going to provide what we needed. Very disappointed in product.

Quality printer

Other than it’s very large size, it has been a great printer so far. Being an over 65 woman, I did have to hire someone to carry it to my upstairs office loft. I bought it specifically because it also prints 11×17 and am pleased the the quality. After the ink cartridges are used which come with the printer (3017), do buy the extra large cartridges (3019) as they are a better value. Some have complained about misfeeds, but have not had that problem. A heavy cardstock sheet is included to be used to run through the printer to help clean up misfeeds. I will certainly use it as directed if I do have a misfeed.

it works and Ellen should give everyone one of these for Christmas

Now I have used it for month or so. And it is still going strong. I have yet to hear loud grinding noises, cnstant cleaning of the heads, and dang it, it still won’t make coffee. I am a game designer and use it to make 11×17 game maps, counters and rules. Paper, card stock, HA! It laughs at all of them. And for several Christmas presents, I made over 50 8×10, 20 5×7, and 30 4×6 photos. No complaints. It actually wore me out. Scanning and sending to my computer is the only thing I can’t do it and it is my fault as I can’t get windows 10 firewall to allow it (could be my silly anti-virus too – Bit Defender – that is one sob of an anti-virus, it doesn’t allow any thing thru). Outside of that, I can scan to a USB stick with no problem. Faxing is great. The lil’ debil in me has me turn on the fax when phone scammers call and let them get that high pitch squeal. It’s funny how quickly they hang up. So that is my review after a bit more of a month. If I could give this 2 more stars, I would. It is well designed and built.

UPDATED: 10/24/17: I purchased this in May and wanted to give it some time before my review. I bought this printer and its predecessor (6720DW) primarily for the 11 x 17 scanning bed. I have a huge collection of space articles going back to the 1960’s beginning to disintegrate. I’ve been scanning them before they completely fall apart. I must say I got better scans on the 6720DW than I do using the 6930DW. While easy to hook up (although I find Brother incredibly cheap for not including a printer-to-computer USB cable) and get started with, I am downgrading my initial 3-star rating to 2 stars. I wish the 5-star reviewers who are not having the problems I have would read this and perhaps be able to suggest a possible solution(s). Brother customer service is unresponsive to my attempts at communication.

Great printer. I love how easy it was to setup the WIFI connection. I was printing from my computers, laptops, tablets and phones on my home network in about an hour (I installed ALL the software). The printer will automatically clean the heads periodically which is great when you don’t print for a longer duration. Being able to print up to 11×17 is great as well. My son has used it for a few 4th grade projects already.

Loaded With Features, Capable, Big

I replaced a Cannon inkjet that was older and was blowing through ink like crazy. I was tempted to go with one of the large tank/ecotank printers but this printer allows large capacity cartridges for a lot better price so went with this to avoid the raw ink refill hassle. This printer has everything I wanted. Setup easy, software way better than Cannon. The only setup problem was locating the plug for hard wire ethernet, there was no reference in the instruction about it. Finally found it inside the lifted cover next to the phone jack, it had a orange cover plug that had to be removed first to expose the port. Network printer installed perfectly on all the printers on the LAN. The screen on the front is great, tilt up for viewing, touch screen easy to navigate, plus it automatically gets the latest firmware, updates it, then lists the release note changes on the screen. How cool is that, no more digging around online to find what has changed. Can do everything from the screen, copy, copy to file, fax, and others. The features are there, FAX, ADF, Duplex (make sure to get Brother driver, windows driver did not support Duplex), Wireless and Ethernet, USB, 2 paper trays one will accept legal, (although when using legal the tray sticks out from front of printer), back loading tray for special paper and sizes, large scan bed up to about 12″ x 16″(LGR size whatever that is), printing speed seems great but didn’t actually measure it. I did not print any photos cause I don’t use color for photos so can’t comment., only for documents that include some color. Also did not use the FAX so no comment on it. Only con is if send a print job with the front panel tray door stowed it will not flip the door open to accept the print. The page will be behind the door bunched up a little. Can leave the door open all the time but if people walk past it does protrude some from the front panel. No problem for single sheets but if you send a large job without opening the door could be an issue. This is a minor complaint. This is a physically BIG printer, at first I thought too much so, but the spot for it was plenty large to accept it. Now it is impressive in size rather than a less capable small printer. The Brother utility also very capable does it all. I like this printer a lot and have no regrets, would buy again.

Frequently loses wifi connection

 on January 22, 2018

I’m a small business owner who was tired of going through cheap printers, so I bit the bullet and bought this printer. It was great at first-fast, good quality printing. After about 6 months, it started losing connection to the wifi frequently. Initially it was as simple as turning the router on and off again. Eventually, it became some complicated issue that required me to be on hold with customer service reps to fix. In the last 2 months, I’ve spent over 4 hours on the phone or trying problem solve it. I’ve even broken down and had to pay for copies at FedEx when I needed something in a hurry. While the customer service is great, the wait times are long. For a product of this price, these things should not be an issue. (We do not have difficulty with any other devices in our home losing wifi connection.) As a business owner, these are things I don’t have time to deal with.
