Real Customer Review
Purchased the HP Office Jet 8720 for my home/home office use. As a home printer, this is very large, but I have a printer pedestal on my desk that does accommodate it. The “footprint” is not out of line with a number of other all in one inkjet printers, but it is large/heavy so be advised.
Set-up was very easy (you can install wirelessly, Ethernet cabled, or direct connect to a single computer – USB cable not included, but most folks would network this printer anyway) and did not take long at all. There was nothing to attach/assemble. take off the packing tape strips, plug in, turn on, wait a few minutes for it to initialize, then follow the screen prompts, install the 4 ink cartridges, add paper and you’re good to go.
All functions perform as they should, scanning/printing/faxing/copying are all very straight forward and can scan/print/copy 2 sided easily as well. I do occasionally send/receive fax, and setting up the fax line went without incident.
Printing is fast for an inkjet, almost as fast as my last laser printer. I have read complaints of noise, but I do not find the 8720 noisy at all (personal opinion) and it is right next to me in my home office. One of the reasons I opted for this printer is that for a mix of text and color printing, the cost per page is far better than a color laser printer and although not a photo-specific printer, this prints far better photos than a color laser printer. Text printing is every bit on par with most laser printers. With it’s pigment-based inks smudging is not an issue at all.
Quality of both text and color printing and overall speed of printing
Love the page forward design – no flimsy irritating paper output tray
Very easy/convenient slide-door for replacing cartridges
Large, bright, well placed color LCD screen for functions
Easy to access and adjust paper well with good capacity
Top sheet feeder picks up multiple copies well
No external power brick
Connects wirelessly easily and maintains network connection well.
Easy to use with smartphones/tablets etc.
HP Instant Ink – great way never to run out of ink, lowers usage cost even more, and no need to run around looking for replacement cartridges
Really wish HP would have a pass-through option for envelopes, photo paper etc. to print envelopes or other occasionally used media you need to empty paper tray for each use – this is the only reason I gave this 4 stars
Again – this is a rather large/heavy printer, people looking at this for home usage should be aware of the printer dimensions/weight when considering if this is right for them…not an issue for a business environment.
Great home office printer, just what I was looking for.

Choosing a printer is such a pain!! I know, I’ve researched them for days! One of the articles I read about it said something that stuck with me: That owning a printer in general is going to be a pain, because no printer is perfect, that’s just how it goes. That being said, I finally chose this one because for the price, it can

I am not at all fond of this printer. I’ve used HP printers for years and currently have an 8600 that I’ve been very happy with. I had to buy a new printer for our church (had an 8600, but the printheads went bad and couldn’t find replacement printheads) so I bought this 8720. The new design is totally weird. Scan bed has been turned to the opposite side.Print cartridge access is no longer through an easy open door, but through sliding up the bed onto which printed sheets come out. Most egregious (in my opinion) is that when an ink cartridge is empty, it no longer tells you WHICH cartridge is empty, but just that the ink cartridge is empty and needs to be replaced. I replaced one that showed empty on the ink levels; still didn’t work. Replaced it with a second one; still didn’t work. Refreshed the “ink levels” and saw that a different one was now empty and replace that one, as well. Finally worked. Who designed this thing?!?!?!?!
A NICE IMPROVEMENT

Admittedly, I have had this only 3 days, but I am very impressed with this printer. My previous printer was an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus. I had that printer for years but when I started working from home, the strain on it was just too much and it cost almost as much to replace the worn out part as a new printer. So, I bought this one and I am very happy with it. The colors are sharp and clear. The ink doesn’t smudge and so far the claims that the ink last much longer are on track. I have printed quite a lot in the three days I have had it and the ink levels have hardly moved. I am so relieved. I don’t like change. The only thing that I was not prepared for was the weight of the printer. I am in my 70’s still working from necessity and getting that big printer up the stairs was very strenuous. However, it is in a heavy plastic bag and so I just opened the box downstairs and then used the bag to help me move the printer up one step at a time. It is easy to set up and if you have trouble with the printed manual, just go online and they spell it out for you so you aren’t confused. Also the paper prints face down, so you don’t have to re-sort the pages when they are printed like the older model.
Great printer, just avoid wireless with U-Verse

I had a lot of trouble initially. The printer would report it was busy when it wasn’t. Trying to print was always an adventure – how many times would I have to power cycle the printer, router, and PC before it would finally print?
Problem printer, terrible HP customer service
on November 12, 2017
This printer printed lines across color prints and all printing on photo paper. With many hours of online trouble shooting and HP support the problem persisted. The 45 minute wait time to speak to an HP tech was ridiculous. After many hours on the phone with them I was told to call back the next day to speak to a department about getting the printer replaced. The next day I spent another 45 minutes waiting to get through to someone and was cut off a couple of times due to their phone system not operating correctly. After all that they wanted to ship me new ink cartridges in 8-10 days to troubleshoot some more, rather than replace the printer.

Works great- Ink is a wasteful scam.

I have to say this is an outstanding printer. It’s a great workhorse in that it prints black and white documents really fast, as well as color docs. If I want to load some glossy paper and print some nice photos, it really shines. Scanning is a joy as well either with the adf or the flatbed. That’s the main uses for me but it does so much more that I haven’t even tried such as printing from USB, scan to email, faxing and more.
NUMEROUS printing problems!!! I DO NOT Recommend this printer at ALL

I’ve owned this printer for 2 months and today it stopped printing the correct colors (when printing and when copying) for no reason. It sat unused for about 4 days and when I printed my next document, the colors all had a reddish tint.
We should demand quality products – again in America!

For 6 months this has worked reasonably well with the exception that we’ve never been able to get the wireless scan to work even with the expensive help of an onsite IT consultant. And, now, the feeder does not work; documents must be placed on the flatbed and cannot be fed into the auto-feeder. One would think, and we should all demand with a loud, unified voice, that companies produce well-made, and made-to-last products or we boycott those companies including firms like HP.
AVOID the 8700 series

Riddled by problems. Will not print on any heavier paper than regular. Card stock and photo paper consistently jam. After trying all troubleshooting and research found this is a common problem with this printer. The worst part is HP support has become absolutely terrible! An agent poked around the computer for 2 HOURS, really had no idea what he was doing, except wasting my time, couldn’t fix, but told me it was not the printer, it was the paper. I actually laughed and then he hung up. BTW, paper was normal 81/2X11, 65lb card stock that prints in every other printer including an older hp inkjet. Agent also marked the ticket as closed even though it was not resolved whatsoever. HP should be ashamed of themselves! I’m not done with the issue, but will not buy another HP inkjet printer, that’s for sure! Buyer Beware! I would avoid this one!
