This is a review of the HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 Wireless All in One Photo Printer.
(Measures 19.7” x 17.7: x 13.3” and average use expectation of 250 to 2000 pages a month.)
Summary – I wanted a multi-function printer for my many needs and I could find no other one even remotely close to the cost and feature of this one. Here is a quick chart of the things I considered which lead me to this. It has worked flawlessly since purchase, exceeding all expectations and I will update this review should I see any issues with ongoing use. This is hands down a five-star item in my books and I would recommend.
You can scan single or double-sided documents. This is great as I can avoid the need to flip to get the scan of a second side.
Scan to pc-email features.
You can setup an email to send print jobs to. (Emails, photos, word docs, excel docs, pdf docs, etc.) It literally is simple as opening up a new email, adding attachments, add in an email address for the printer and clicking send. Printer gets email from wherever you are (providing you have it connected to internet and setup) and the printer will print the docs. Great for those who need to print something remotely or from a device-pc that the printer was not actually setup on.
Large 4.3” Touchscreen interface. You can see the icons and easily know what you are doing.
Photo cartridges are easy to install.
Can be connected numerous ways. Wifi, USB and ethernet.
Is a quick unit considering the lower price. ($172 for the 8720 white version which is what I have.)
(Up to 24ppm black and 20ppm color and holds 250 pages in the tray. The output tray will hold 150 pages.)
Can scan to email and desktop. I can use the touchscreen on the printer to have a document scanned and saved to the desktop of my pc. (More than one pc can be setup for a scan to pc feature.)
No dedicated tray for 4×6 photos. You need to empty the main paper tray and adjust the sliders for the 4×6 photo stock you put in.
Little loud and action seems a little jerky vs. smooth.
Ink is expensive. In short, you will spend up to $120 for FOUR XL cartridges. (Black, Cyan, Magenta and
Yellow.) Less than $100 if you are not getting xl sizes. If you get aftermarket brands, you can get 2 black and one of each color in size xl for around $60.
Several people have indicated the instant ink program works, however, has quirks. I do not use this feature as I would never want anything ordered automatically. Plus they indicate there are excessive pop-ups for instant ink
READ THIS IF YOU ARE CONFIGURING VIA WIFI!

Many Amazon commenters have raised intermittent wifi connection problems. The solution is to upgrade the 8720’s firmware to WMP1CN1624BR. The inventory Amazon Prime is shipping likely has WMP1CN1606AR (per another reviewer, mine had that too). *BUT* be careful if you check/upgrade firmware directly from the 8720 (via touch panel menu screen). Because the printer loses connection in under 3min, it may not fully download the patch via Wifi before it times out! The farthest my printer got to was 72% before dropping connection – ANNOYING!
Beware HP Instant Ink
on March 26, 2017
This printer is fine, not great but fine. We came from a laser, but didn’t want to re-invest in the cost of a laser printer so we bought this one. This review is mostly about HP Instant Ink and how it is a bad deal. I signed up for it when I got the printer figuring it was a convenient way to get ink delivered. They made me choose how many pages I would print per month which I did not knowing exactly what I would print. They said I could change plans at any time. I went over my allotment, but didn’t know that until I got my first bill from them and they charge by the page when you go over your “allotment” so I was charged double of what I expected. I print erratic amounts with more one month over the other so there is no way that I could accurately predict how many pages I would print. Because of this and the costs associated with HP Instant Ink I decided to cancel the service… well that was easier said than done. I cancelled, got a confirmation and then they kept me enrolled for weeks. They sent out new ink and kept counting the pages I printed on my closed account. It took a few weeks to finally get it fixed, but now today my printer will not work at all. The screen says that I can’t use my printer anymore until I re-enroll in HP Instant Ink or go to the store and buy non-HP Instant Ink cartridges. I can go buy new cartridges, but it sucks that my printer is now useless until I get those new cartridges. I will be buying third party ink at a fraction of the cost and it’s pretty safe to say that this is my last HP printer.
Instant Ink wont recognize the printer …. fix steps listed

The printer overall has met our needs but I ran into an issue last night where it locked out all printing with a “Cannot print until printer is enrolled in instant ink”.

Had very serious connection issues- wasted over 10 hours trying to set this up (and I am not a printer/computer novice) – it connected to my network but continuously disconnected every 5 minutes and I would have to restart printer. Online tips were not helpful – even changed to static IP address with no difference. Most frustrating was that there is no easily found 800 number to contact customer support. FINALLY, after I was about to return the printer, on a sub-menu of the printer I found a section to update the firmware which seems to have fixed the problem. HP PLEASE INVEST IN CUSTOMER SUPPORT or prepare for a lot of returns.

printer works but for the love of god leave me alone with the HP instant ink enrollment, I don’t need you sending me your ink. Currently the screen on the printer won’t change from the annoying reminder that i am not fully enrolled in their program. I even set up the printer with it in mind that I wanted nothing to do with instant ink, but sure enough, here i am, getting badgered by HP to sign up for their ink program on the printer itself. Do yourself a favor and rid yourself of printers in your home. annoying.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 is a DEFECTIVE product. The problem experienced by this printer of dropping the WiFI connection is just one of many problems. The solution posed by another reviewer to update the HP firmware from the HP support website, which is expected to remedy the dropped WiFi problem is not a solution to this multi-faceted problem. I updated to Firmware Version: WMP1CN1624BR as soon as I had setup the printer, tested the printing, tested Scan to eMail, tested ePrint – all of which worked fine. However, when the printer was put to work at our workplace the many problems revealed themselves.

Purchased this in February 2017 and first it was great. Then after updating the firmware, each time we printed after the printer was idle, it would print double/blurry. Looked online and saw that this issue had gone back and forth with users and HP for months. Unfortunately we were outside of our return window with Amazon so had to deal with HP on this.
THIS PRINTER STINKS!!!

Had an old deskjet that lasted 17 years. THEY DON’T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TO!!! This printer stinks. #1 – It never fails to stop printing from the desktop that it is wirelessly connected to. MULTIPLE reinstallations does not help…THERE IS NO SOLUTION. #2 – Print quality is horrible. It’s like a little kids printer. I highly suggest spending more money on a printer that works. DO NOT BUY ON AMAZON because return will be impossible when it starts acting up ( 2months after you’ve bought it. AVOID!!!!!
Yellow cartridge won’t work no mater how many times we replace it.
on March 12, 2017
So we bought this at Christmas and it came with “starter ink” we enrolled in HP’s instant ink program. We used all the Y starter ink and the other ink was already here, we were excited to install the new ink and after installing the new non-starter ink all of it worked fine except the Y so we contacted the HP instant ink CSR and they replaced the ink cartridge and so we installed it and the Y still won’t work. We are now in the process of getting our 3rd Y ink cartridge. I am thinking we don’t have a cartridge issue but a printer issue.
